School Grade 6

Sabastian was born in 2009 in Makira village, Mfangano East location on Mfangano Island. He is the fourth born child in a family of eight children. His father who was the breadwinner passed away and left Sebastian and his siblings under the care of their mother. Sabastian’s mother was forced to become the breadwinner after the passing of her husband. She fetches firewood to sale to help feed her large family. This only brings in a small amount and often the family is only able to afford one meal a day, taking porridge only for lunch. This not only impacts Sebastian and his siblings physically but also academically. His mother cannot always afford to send her children to school.  Sabastian has had to miss a lot of school which has affected his academic performance. He has worn torn uniforms and has occasionally gone to school in bare feet due to the lack of resources this family has. When Sabastian is at home, he sleeps on a mat and covers himself with a bed sheet in his mother’s iron roofed, mud walled house. They draw water from the lake and drink untreated water.

His oldest sibling, Brian, is learning in Koyo Secondary School in grade 9. The second born, Henry, is learning at Misori Primary in grade 7. The third born, Felisa, is learning in Kisumu where she is staying with her maternal aunt. The fifth born, Lesly, is learning at Lion of Judah in Pre-Primary 2. The sixth born, Brandy, is also in PP2 but attends Misori Primary School while the last born, Salma, is not school age yet.

Sabastian was learning at Misori Primary School in grade 3 before joining GGCC. He was admitted to GGCC in 2020 in grade 2 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. He is so grateful to God for the opportunity to join GGCC. His mother is equally grateful for this opportunity for her son. He likes the school compound, the teachers and his fellow pupils who are so friendly.

At GGCC, Sabastian will learn without interruption or fear of missing classes. He will be provided with school uniforms and scholastic materials. He will get all the three meals which he was lacking at home. Sabastian is looking forward to working hard so as bring back hope to his family and especially his mother who has struggled so much.  His dream is to become an Engineer. His best subject is Christian Religious Education (CRE).
