Mary is the second born in a family of four children. She was born in Wasamo village, Mfangano West location in 2010. Her mother never married and was a single parent. Mary’s aunt, her mother’s sister, helped with the care of Mary when she could. After the death of Mary’s mother, Mary’s aunt continued to care for the Mary, because the grandparents were elderly and unable to take her.  Mary’s siblings were sent to live with other relatives.

Although Mary has been staying with her Aunt, it has not been easy. Mary’s aunt has her own children to care for as well. They often do not have enough for everyone. Mary shares a bed sheet and mat with her cousins.

Mary was admitted to GGCC in January of 2019 in grade 2 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. She was previously enrolled at Mawanga primary school in grade 2. Mary reports that she is so happy to join GGCC and that this is a big relief for her Aunt who has been struggling to care for her. She will now concentrate on her studies without missing classes due to lack of levies. She will get all the scholastic materials she needs for school and will have access to all three meals a day.

Mary would like to work hard to become a pilot in the future. Her best subject is science. During her free time, she likes swimming.
