Grade Male: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 5

Malon is the youngest child in a family of three children. He was born in Lianda village on Rusinga Island. Unfortunately, his mother died leaving he and his siblings under the care of their father. Malon’s father had a difficult time raising three children and also working. He is a fisherman but does not own his own equipment and is dependent on others to be able to work. So even when he is able to work, there may be a low number of fish brought in which directly impacts his ability to provide for his children. In addition to the daily struggle they have faced, their home caught fire and they lost everything. They were extremely dependent on those around them to help with food and clothes for the children. After some time, with the help of relatives and neighbors, they were able to build a new home for the family.

Even with their new home, this family has struggled mightily. There have been times when this family has gone without food, or only had enough for one meal a day. Malon and his siblings have not been able to concentrate on their studies or attend school regularly. There has been nothing they have faced without difficulty.

When the children are able to attend school, his older two sisters, Joyce and Faith, attend Lianda Primary School in grades 9 and 5. Malon also attended Lianda Primary School before joining GGCC in grade 3 in 2022.

Malon’s father is so grateful that Malon has this opportunity to learn at GGCC. This is a great relief to him. Malon loves the school environment and the quality of education being offered. He likes his fellow pupils and teachers. While at GGCC, Malon will not miss classes again due to lack of school levies and this will help him to concentrate on his studies and work towards his dream of becoming a doctor when he grows up. His best subject is mathematics. During his leisure time, he likes playing soccer with his peers. Malon has stomach pains which could be ulcers due to the hunger he has faced. With proper and consistent nutrition, they are hopeful these will go away.
