Brighton O. 1597

Grade Male: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 11

Brighton is the fifth born child in a family of six children. He was born in 2005 in Rinya village, Mfangano West location on Mfangano Island. His mother died in 2017 from cervical cancer and left he and his siblings under the care of their father who works as a peasant farmer. Brighton’s father’s meager income is not enough to provide for his large family. They often struggle to put food on the table, much less, pay for the children’s education. Often, Brighton has missed classes when they didn’t have the money to pay for his school fees. And there are times when they only have enough for two meals a day. In addition to the financial struggles this family faces, there are health challenges as well.

Brighton’s oldest sibling, Veroline Obel, is attending Homa-Bay Training College.  The second born, Felix Obel, is learning at Ogango Secondary School. The third born Vincent attends Samanga Secondary School. The fourth born, Richard is enrolled at Ratanga Secondary. And finally, the sixth born, Dirine Obel, is learning at Arunda Primary school.

Brighton was admitted to GGCC in 2021 from Wakula Primary School after completing his 8th grade national exams. He was admitted in grade 9 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. He and his father are so grateful for the opportunity he has been granted to study at GGCC. He likes the school environment and the educational facilities like the library and laboratory. These were not available to him at his previous schools.

Brighton knows he will be able to concentrate on his studies without the interruption of being sent hom for lack of payment. He can focus his efforts on studying to become a lawyer. His best subject is History.

During his leisure time, Brighton likes playing soccer. He is in good health.
