Wendy O. 1183

Grade Female: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 7

Wendy is the youngest in a family of three girls. She was born in 2010 in Wasamo village, Mfangano west location in Mfangano Division. Wendy’s parents separated when she was just a year old. However, her father died in 2013. Shortly after, Wendy’s mother abandoned the children.

Wendy’s older two sisters have been taken in by their maternal aunt who lives on Takawiri Island where she sells vegetables to support the girls. Laura, the oldest of the girls, is in grade 2 at Mirunda primary school. The middle sister, Sheila, is learning at Takawiri primary school in grade 2 also.

After her father’s death and mother’s abandonment, Wendy stayed with her step-mother for 2 years before being taken in by her grandmother. Wendy’s step mother was burning and selling charcoal but that was never enough to support Wendy and the other children in the home. Wendy didn’t have clothing or shoes, and getting 3 meals a day was rare. This dire situation is what prompted the grandmother to take over the care of Wendy, even though she was caring for 5 other children. The grandmother is a peasant farmer but one of her own children is working in Nairobi and helps supports the family. Wendy gets 2 meals daily, sleeps under a mosquito net on a mat and covers herself with a bed sheet.

Paying for Wendy’s education was not always certain. Well-wishers often helped when they could, but even this was not enough to keep Wendy in school on a consistent basis. Wendy was formerly learning at Kiwari primary school in KG3 before joining GGA.

Wendy was admitted to GGCC in January of 2017 in KG3 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. She is happy to join GGCC where she will learn without any interference of being sent home. At GGCC she will have all the 3 meals and sleep well on a bed.

With God’s help her life will never be the same again. Wendy likes the school compound and the playground equipment. She would like to become a teacher when she grows up.

 Update, November 2017:

Wendy has placed 6th in her class of 34 students.  Her favorite subject is Swahili and she hopes to be a teacher when she grows up.  When Wendy goes home, she attends a tribal church and she loves to praise the Lord.  She has been struggling with headaches lately.  Wendy loves playing netball, a game that is very similar to basket ball and volleyball.
