Velma O. 1012

Grade Female: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 11

Velma is the fourth born in a family of five children. She was born in Mauta village, Wakula South sub location, Mfangano South location. Both of her parents are alive but are old and cannot do much to provide for the family’s needs. The father has four wives, Velma’s mother being the youngest one. Due to the size of the large family, he cannot provide enough. It has been a difficult life for Velma and her siblings. Many times Velma and her siblings would be sent home from school because of school levies, of which, they would stay home for some time before the family would get enough money to pay for them to return.

Velma’s eldest sibling, Lorine Atieno, completed grade 8 and is waiting to join grade 9. The second and third born, Sheldon Owino and Pheny Achieng, are learning at Mauta primary school in grades three and five respectively. The last born, Mitchelle Achieng, is in KG2 at Mauta primary school.

Before joining GGCC, Velma was learning at Mauta Primary school in grade 3. While at home she helps her mother with house chores. Velma was admitted to GGCC in January 2016 in grade one grade as a vulnerable and needy child. She is very happy to join GGCC where she will learn without any more interruptions. At GGCC, she will also enjoy a good learning environment. She would like to work hard and become a teacher when she grows up. She enjoys playing netball.

Update, November 2017: Velma enjoys her math and science classes and hopes to be a nurse in the future.  She placed 30th in her class of 45 students. She attends a Seventh Day Adventist church when she returns to her village.  Velma enjoys the simple games they play at GGCC, such as jumping rope or hopscotch.
