School Grade 5

Thomas is the second born child in a family of three children. He was born in 2010 on Takawiri Island, Mfangano East location. Both of his parents are alive, although his mother deserted the family and her whereabouts are unknown at this time. She has returned several times and tried to take the children away from their father. This has been a very difficult situation for Thomas and his siblings. Thomas’ father works by fishing in other people’s nets. This job is very unsteady and seasonal. Therefore, Thomas’ father is often not able to provide for the basic needs of his children. When the fishing is especially low, Thomas’ father has left the children on their own to go to other beaches to try and catch fish. There have been times where they family was only able to afford tea for both the morning and midday meal. Thomas has not only suffered physically, but also academically, missing classes due to the inability to pay for school. 

While at home, Thomas sleeps on an old mattress and covers himself with an old blanket. He drinks untreated water from the lake.

His older sister, Chelsea, is learning at Takawiri Primary School in grade 4 and the younger sister, Angela, is also enrolled at Takawiri Primary in grade PP2. Thomas was also learning at Takakwiri Primary School in grade 2 before joining GGCC.

He was admitted to GGCC in January 2020 in grade 1 as vulnerable child. He is very happy to join GGCC and his father is also very grateful to God and the school management for the opportunity granted to his son. This is a tremendous relief for Thomas’ father. At GGCC, Thomas will get all the three meals that he was unable to get at home and he will learn without the fear of being sent home for lack of school fees. This will help him to concentrate on his studies and hence improve his school performance. He will get all the scholastic materials, a school uniform and sleep well.

Thomas would like to work hard to become a pilot when he grows up. During his leisure time, he likes playing soccer.
