Grade Female: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 9

Shonela is the second born child in a family of three children. She was born in 2007 in Kitenyi village in Mfangano East location. Both of her parents are alive. Her father who is the breadwinner is a fisherman while her mother is a housewife. Although her father works, he has struggled to provide all that his family needs. He is a fisherman but does not own his own equipment and is dependent on others to be able to work. So even when he can work, there may be a low number of fish brought in which directly impacts his ability to provide for his children. Getting all three meals daily is a struggle and there are times when the family has only one meal of porridge daily. In addition to the daily financial struggle, Shonela’s parents also face health challenges that increase the daily burden they face.

Shonela’s older sister, Elizabeth, was able to finish high school, but only through the help of extended relatives. She did not go on to college. Shonela’s younger brother Cecil is learning at Kitenyi Primary School in grade 4 when their parents have the money to pay for the school fees. Shonela was learning at Kitenyi primary school before joining GGCC.

She was admitted to GGCC in 2022 in grade 7. She is so happy and excited to join GGCC. Her parents are so grateful for this opportunity granted to their daughter to learn at GGCC. They believe that she will be able to bring hope and light to their family. This is a great relief to her parents. Shonela loves the quality education offered at GGCC and the teachers’ commitment.

At GGCC, she will not miss classes again due to lack of school levies and scholastic materials. This will give her the opportunity to concentrate on her studies and work toward her dream of becoming a doctor. Her best subject is Mathematics. During her leisure time, she likes playing soccer. She is in good health. Shonela gave her life to Christ when she joined GGCC and is attending the new believers class offered at GGCC.
