Sheryl O. 1331

Grade Female: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 6

Sheryl Atieno was born in Mauta village in Mfangano Island, South Location. She is the fourth born in a family of four children. Both of her parents are alive, although both have health challenges. Her father, who is the bread winner, works for a boat crew, while her mother sells charcoal and firewood.

Sheryls’s oldest sister, Mercy Akinyi, is in grade 8 at Sindo primary school. The second and third born, Cynthia Achieng and Felix Otieno, are both learning at Mauta primary in grades 7 and 6, respectively.

Even though Sheryl’s parents are alive and working, life has not been easy for Sheryl and her siblings as they often were sent home from school due to lack of school fees. This interfered with her academic performance.  Sheryl faces some health challenges which requires regular medication and treatment, and this is also a challenge for the family in paying for the medicines.

Before joining GGCC, Sheryl was learning at Mauta primary school, but she was vetted to join GGCC in January of 2019. She was admitted to grade one as vulnerable child. Sheryl will be able to focus on her academics, and with her health, three meals a day will be an improvement for her. With the help and support of the staff of GGCC, Sheryl will also be able to get her medicines on time and follow the treatment protocol.
