School Grade 5

 Shakil is the second born child in a family of three children, two boys and a girl. He was born in 2005 in Kakiimba village, Mfangano North Location. Shakils father died leaving Shakil with his mother who has a mental problem. When Shakil’s mother developed amental problems, she became so violent that her parents were forced to take her back into their home. Shakil and his siblings were then moved to his grandfather’s home.

His older grandfather, who is the breadwinner, has two other orphaned grandchildren to take care of. He works as a peasant farmer, but earns only a meager income. He cannot meet all the needs of his grandchildren in addition to their educational needs.  Shakil takes two meals while at home because the grandfather is not able to provide all the three meals.

Shakil’s elder sibling, Patrick Okuku, is in grade 4 at a school called Mary Magdaline. The third born, Churchil Odhiambo, is in KG 1 and the youngest, Mary Atieno, who has not started school yet.

While at home Shakil sleeps in his grandfather’s house on a mat and covers himself with a bed sheet which they all share. Before joining GGCC, he was learning at Kakiimba primary school.

Shakil was admitted to GGCC in January of 2018 as an orphaned and vulnerable child.  He is very happy to join GGCC where he will get adequate food, a safe environment and a proper education. He relates very well with his peers.

Shakil loves football and athletics. He would like to work hard and become a doctor in the future.
