Saida is the second to last born child in a family of six children. She was born in 2006 in Mauta village, Mfangano South location in Mfangano Division. Her mother passed on in 2013 leaving Saida and her siblings under the care of the father, who is a fisherman.

Her first-born sibling, Foema Atieno, is schooling at Mauta primary school in grade 7. The second, third, and fourth born siblings, Ephy Akinyi, Morgan Odhiambo and Condoleezza Reece are learning at Mauta primary school in grades 6, 4, and 1 respectively. Saida’s youngest sibling is mentally challenged and does not attend school.

With the limited income the father earns from fishing, he is not able to meet all of the family’s needs. He is sometimes forced to illegally burn and sell charcoal in an attempt to supplement the family’s income. However, it is not enough. Saida would be forced to stay home from school until the father was able to get enough money to send her back to school. This greatly affected her academic performance.

While at home, Saida sleeps on a mat that she shares with her other siblings and covers herself with a shared bed sheet.

Saida was admitted to GGCC in January of 2017 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. She is happy to join GGCC and not fear being sent home for lack of school fees. She will also enjoy all the three meals provided in school. She hopes that her life will forever be changed. Saida promises to work her so as to bring about change for her family.
