Rachel O. 1155

Grade Female: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 7

Rachel is the second born in a family of two children. She was born in 2006 in Nyahera village, Mfangano South location. Her mother died while she was still very young and had not begun her schooling. Rachel and her brother, Joseph, were left under the care of their father who is a artist.

Joseph is learning at Nyahera primary school in grade four.

Rachel’s father had three wives. Rachel’s mother was the second wife. One of the other wives has three children that are also in the home with Rachel and Joseph. Life has not been very easy for Rachel and her siblings as the father’s occupation does not generate a lot of income.  And with the large family, what he does make does not stretch far enough. Often, they only have two meals a day.

Unfortunately, because of the limited income, Rachel’s education has been interrupted quite a bit. She would be sent home from school for lack of payment and stay away for a week or more until her father could get the money together to send her back.

Rachel sleeps in her step mother’s house on a mat and shares her single blanket with her step sister.  She assists her mother with household chores, like fetching water and washing utensils.

Rachel was admitted to GGCC in January of 2017 as an orphaned and vulnerable child in KG2.  She is so excited to be at GGCC where she will eat 3 meals, and not be sent away from school for lack of school payment. She loves the school environment and is making friends quickly. She especially enjoys the swings and skipping rope! Rachel hopes that with God’s help she will become a teacher.

Update, November 2017:

Rachel likes GGCC because she is able to learn and she also likes the behavior and environment of the school.  She has placed 14th in her class of 24 students and hopes to be a nurse when she finishes school.  Rachel is saved and attends Pentecostal Evangelical Fellowship of Africa church when she returns to her village.  Rachel has headaches off and on, but is doing better now that she is at GGCC.  She enjoys the simple games the girls play at school, such as jumping rope and skipping rocks.
