Patrick (Shida) O. 1054

Grade Male: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 9

Shida was born in Uganda in 2005. His parents were residents of Wakiangata village, Waware sub location of Mfangano North location but moved to stay in Uganda. After the death of his parents in Uganda in 2012, Shida and his sisters underwent very hard times as they were subjected to extreme poverty and were unable to attain the basic needs and care they deserved. Feeding was a problem. Even though the father had a rented house before he died, there wasn’t any willing to help pay the rent for Shida and his siblings to stay there. They often lacked food in addition to shelter and clothing. They were forced to move in with well-wishers. When Shida’s uncle heard about their plight, he went for the orphans and brought them back to Kenya.

Shida has two siblings. Harriet Okanda who is learning at GGCC and Josephine Achieng who is in grade two at Wakiangata primary school.

Life has been difficult for Shida and his siblings even with their uncle.  Getting both the basic and education needs has been a big problem. The step mother, who is the sole bread winner, has a meager income which cannot sustain the family. She has seven children of her own to care so providing for this large family has been a challenge.

Due to lack of school levies, Shida often missed school. This greatly interfered with his performance. At home, they stay in a mud-walled house with an iron sheet roof.

Shida joined GGCC as an orphaned and vulnerable child in January of 2016. He was enrolled in grade KG3. Shida is very excited to be at GGCC, and join his sister Harriet. He likes the school environment and promises to work hard so as to change the story of his home.

At GGCC Shida will get the quality education he has been missing and no longer faces the threat of being sent home for lack of school levies. He will get all the three meals daily which has not always been the case. Shida also says that he is now able to sleep on a bed and mattress for the first time.
