School Grade 5

Leakey was born in 2014 in Wasamo village, in Mfangano West location. He is the youngest child in a family of 2 children. Both of his parents are alive. His father, who is the breadwinner, is a peasant farmer and struggles with alcoholism. So, the little income he earns is often spent on alcohol instead of the family’s needs. Leakey’s mother left the family and is not involved at this time. In addition to these challenges, Leakey has health challenges. With his mother gone and his father acting irresponsibly, Leakey’s sister took over his care, including his health treatments, while she was living at home. She has since joined a high school (Kakiimba Secondary School, grade 9) and is no longer able to care for Leakey as she did before, thus increasing the vulnerability of Leakey’s situation. Proper food, medical treatment and attendance at school were not consistent for Leakey.

When Leakey was able to go to school, he attended Solid Rock School. Being admitted to GGCC in 2022, has been nothing short of a lifesaving opportunity. He was admitted to grade 3 as a vulnerable child. His father is thankful for the opportunity and Leakey is happy to be able to learn in such a loving and welcoming environment.

At GGCC, he will not miss his classes again due to lack of school levies and scholastic materials. He will be able to concentrate on his academics. Leakey will also have people to monitor and support him in his medical treatment, hopefully leading to viral suppression. He will also get the proper nutrition and 3 meals a day. Leakey has an opportunity to work towards becoming a pilot in the future. His best subjects are mathematics and Kiswahili language. During his leisure time, Leakey likes playing soccer with his peers.
