John O. 1328

Grade Male: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 11

John is from Wakinga village, Mfangano East location. He is the youngest in a family of four children and was born in 2010. His father died in 2012 after suffering from opportunistic infections. John and his siblings were left under the care of their mother, who was forced to become the sole breadwinner for the family. John’s mother has been struggling to make ends meet for her family. Although she works on the beaches pulling in others’ nets, this meager income is not enough for her to be able to provide for all the needs of her children. She is also responsible for the care of her ailing brother in-law, which adds to her financial responsibilities. She is only able to provide two meals for the family.

John’s oldest brother, Fredrick, completed his grade 12 exams in 2018 and received a grade of C. He has yet to join a college. The second born child, Brian, is in grade 8 at Wakiangata primary school, while the third born, Rolex, is learning at Sena primary school in grade 7.

The family’s limited income has impacted John’s educational performance as well. At previous schools, he would be sent home from school frequently due to lack of school levies. Due to the vulnerability of this situation, John was vetted and admitted to GGCC in January of 2019 as orphaned and vulnerable child. He is in grade 6.

John is happy to join GGCC where he will learn without the interruption of being sent home. He promises to work hard to work towards his goal of becoming a pilot. His best subject is science, and he loves playing football in his leisure time.
