J. Joanes O. 1163

Grade Male: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 9

Joanes is the second born in a family of two children. He was born in 2008 in Soklo village, Mfangano West Location. His father died in 2009 when he was only a year old. He and his brother were left under the care of his mother, who has some mental challenges. She works as a peasant farmer when she can, but makes a very small amount of money. Her relatives help her when they can.

Joanes’ elder brother, Elijah, is enrolled at GGCC in grade 7, which the family is grateful for. Joanes’ is joining him at GGCC from his former school, Soklo, in grade 3. Even with the help of their relatives, the boy’s education was often interrupted. And sufficient food was not always available for their family.  Sometimes the family would only have enough for porridge one time a day. There were times when the mother disappeared for awhile, leaving the boys with a grandparent.

Joanes was admitted to GGCC in January 2017 as an orphaned and vulnerable child in grade 3. He is a bright boy who believes that his life will never be the same. He will learn without interruptions, have 3 meals a day, and receive the proper school materials he needs in order to learn.

Joanes would like to become a police officer. His best subject is Kiswahili. Joanes loves playing soccer.

 Update, November 2017:

Junior placed 14th in his class of 41 students.  He loves his math class and hopes to be a pilot in the future.  He is saved, and attends a catholic church when he returns to his village.  In his free time, Junior love playing soccer.
