Ishmael O. 1691

Grade Male: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 9

Ishmael is the fifth born child in a family of six children. He was born in 2009 in Kakiimba village in Mfangano North location. Both of his parents are alive.  His father does not have a formal job and is not providing for the family needs. His mother, who works as a peasant farmer takes on most of the responsibility for providing for the family. Peasant farming is not a reliable source of income as it is seasonal and weather dependent. His mother often ends up doing odd jobs like weeding for people in order to provide for her family. Unfortunately, at times, it just isn’t enough, and the children have missed meals as well as school time for lack of payment.

Ishmael takes two meals a day depending on availability, mostly taking porridge as one of the meals. He has struggled academically because of the inconsistency in attending, sometimes missing days or a week at a time. His older brother, Omamo, could not go on to high school after completing 8th grade because there just wasn’t the funds to send him. His older sister, Diana, had help from relatives and completed grade 12. Diana’s twin, Lillian, dropped out of school in grade 7. The fourth born, Rachel, is enrolled at GGCC in grade 11. Now Ishmael joins her at GGCC in grade 7. Their youngest sibling, Jim, is enrolled at Kakiimba Primary School in grade 5.

Ishmael’s parents, especially his mother, are so grateful to God for the opportunity for him to learn at GGCC with his sister. This is a great relief to his parents. Ishmael is equally as happy to join GGCC. He likes the school environment and the quality of education that is being offered. He likes the committed teachers and pupils who are so friendly. He knows he will be able to learn without interruption and will also get 3 meals a day. He will work hard toward his goals of becoming a journalist or news reporter. His best subject is English. During his leisure time, Ishmael likes playing soccer. He also participates in scout’s activities. He is in good health.
