School Grade 8

Ida is the fourth born child in a family of five children. She was born in 2008 in Wasamo village, Mfangano West location on Mfangano Island. Her father, who was the breadwinner, died and left Ida and her siblings under the care of their mother who is just a peasant farmer.

Ida’s oldest sibling, Mourice, is learning at Tom Mboya Secondary school in grade 10. The second born, Evance, is also in grade 10 but attends Osodo Williams Secondary School. The third born, Raphael, is learning in Kisumu in grade 7, while the last born, Denzel, is still a baby and not old enough to attend school yet.

Ida and her siblings faced a lot of challenges both socially and academically after the death of their father. Working as a peasant farmer, their mother did not earn enough money to cover the needs of the family. They can only afford two meals a day. Ida has also missed school because her mother could not make the payments for her to remain in school. She also could not afford the uniform and other school materials that Ida needed. This has affected her academic performance. When Ida is home, she sleeps on a mat and covers herself with a blanket. She drinks untreated lake water.

Before joining GGCC, Ida was learning at Wasamo Primary School in grade 3. Ida was admitted to GGCC in 2020 in grade 4 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. She is so happy to join GGCC and prays that the Lord will help her to meet her life dream of becoming a nurse. Her mother is equally grateful to God. Ida likes the school environment, the teachers and fellow pupils, who she says are so lovely. Her best subject is English.

At GGCC, Ida will learn and be able to concentrate on her academics without the interruption of being sent home from school because of lack of school levies, school uniform or scholastic material.  This will boost her academic performance. In school she will get all the three meals and even porridge and tea for snacks.
