Florence is the last-born child in a family of five children. She was born in 2006 in Kitenyi village, Mfangano East location. Her father died in 2013, leaving Florence and her siblings under the care of her mother, who is sole bread winner and earns her living from peasant farming.

Due to the limited amount of income her mother earns, Florence’s three eldest siblings, Naomi, Reuben and Treezer were forced to drop out of school at grades 7 and 10 respectively. They are all now married. Her other brother, Yusuf, managed to reach grade 12 but not without a lot of difficulties. He obtained a grade of C in 2015 but has been unable to join any university because he simply does not have the funds.

Watching her siblings struggle with getting their education and generally in life, Florence has feared she would not be able to complete her education and thus not be able to achieve her dreams. Even her own experience of being sent home from school because of lack of payment, has contributed to increasing this fear.  

However, Florence was vetted to join GGCC as an orphaned and vulnerable child in January of 2018. She is very happy, as she is now sure of achieving her goal of becoming a nurse. Her mother is also grateful to the administration for considering her daughter.

Florence loves playing with her peers and also watching volleyball matches during her leisure time.
