School Grade 5

David is the sixth and the last born in a family of six children. He was born in 2012 in Malamasa village in Mfangano East location. Both of his parents have passed away. His father died suddenly when he was just two years old. His mother later passed on after being sick and suffering with a severe headache. After this, he moved to Homa-Bay and lived with his maternal grandmother for five years. Currently, he stays with his step mother who also has three children of her own to care for.

His step mother who has a leg injury from a motorcycle accident struggles to work odd jobs like selling firewood and burning charcoal. Unfortunately, this is never enough to provide for the needs of her children fully. This has made life very difficult for David. Many times he would be sent home from school for lack of school levies and other scholastic materials. It would then take his step mother a while before getting money to pay for David to return. And often David is only able to take two meals a day.

David’s oldest sibling, Mourine, had to drop out of school and she got married because of the desperate situation this family faced. The second born, Samwel, went back to stay with the maternal uncles and later dropped out of school due to poor performance. Anne, the third born, sat for her grade 12 exams but has not yet joined college. George, the fourth born, is in grade six at the local primary school. Dione, the fifth born, attends GGCC and lives with other relatives.

David was learning in Sena Primary School before joining GGCC where he was in grade 2. David was admitted to GGCC in January 2020 in grade 1 as orphaned and vulnerable child. He is so happy to join GGCC and learn together with his sister Dione. He likes the school environment and the buildings and his fellow pupils. His step mother is so grateful to God and to the administration as this is a great relief for her.

At GGCC, David will learn without any interruption or fear of missing classes again. He will get all three meals and sleep well on a bed. He will get a quality education, which will help him to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. During his leisure time, David likes playing soccer.
