Calvin is one of six children. His mother died in 2006 and his father in 2008. His grandmother cares for him, his two unmarried siblings and a cousin. The 76-year-old widowed grandmother does small scale farming and also gets some assistance from her only living son; her other five children have died.

During school breaks, Calvin will sleep at his grandmother's mud-walled, tin-roofed house on a bed. His chores at home include carrying water from the lake and cleaning utensils.

At GGCC, his favorite subjects are math and English. He loves school at GGCC because of the availability of books and food. He would like to become a pilot.

Calvin joined GGCC in 2012.
