School Grade 4

Calvin was born in 2014 in Kakiimba village, Mfangano North location. He is the fifth born child in a family of seven children. Calvin’s father died leaving Calvin and his siblings under the care of their mother. She later remarried, but unfortunately married a man who struggles with alcoholism and does not help to provide for the family. Calvin’s mother helps some of the fishermen on the island pulling in nets, but this does not produce a lot of income and this family often struggles to provide enough food for the family. There are times when they only have enough for two meals a day and at times that is only porridge. They also do not have electricity, often intensifying their already poor circumstances.

Calvin and his siblings have struggled to attend school regularly because of the insufficient funds. They would attend, but then be sent home when they couldn’t pay or didn’t have the materials they need to participate in school. The interruptions in their education have been detrimental to their academic growth.  When they are able to attend, his oldest sister Everline is in grade 11 at St.  Mary’s Mumias and the rest of the siblings attend Kakiimba Primary School. The second and third born, Zachariah and Mercy, are both in grade 8. The fourth born, Dominic, is in grade 6, the sixth born, Sharon, is in grade 1, while the last born, Ramus, is in grade PP2.

Calvin was also learning at Kakiimba Primary School before joining GGCC. He was admitted to GGCC in 2022 in grade 2 as a vulnerable child. His mother is so grateful to God for the opportunity granted to Calvin to learn at GGCC. Calvin is equally happy and excited to study at GGCC. He likes the school environment which is so conducive for learning, even at night. At GGCC, Calvin will learn without missing classes due to lack of school levies and scholastic materials. He will also get all three meals which he was missing at home. This will help him to concentrate on his academics. He would like to become a pilot and his best subject is mathematics. Calvin likes playing soccer during his leisure time. He is in good health.
