School Grade 8

Brian is the second born in a family of five children. He was born in 2007 at Nyakweri village, Waware sub location, Mfangano North location. Brian was not privileged to see his father as he died in the year 2007, a few months before Brian was born. His mother who remained as the caregiver later abandoned him and is residing in one of the beaches in Mfangano Island known as Wakula Beach. 

Out of Brian’s four siblings, only his elder brother, Daniel Otieno is at home after their mother abandoned them and he is learning at Nyakweri Primary Shool. The other three siblings are with their mother. Brian’s aged paternal grandmother took over the care of him and his elder brother. The grandmother who also has other orphaned grandchildren to take care of cannot do much to support them fully.  Brian and his grandmother could not even remember the name of his mother.

Brian’s grandmother could not always afford to provide for his basic needs including school fees. Often Brian would be sent home from school for school levies and would stay home for some time until the grandmother could get the money to pay for him to return. This interfered with his education as he could not settle and learn well.

Brian was formerly learning at Nyakweri primary school and was in KG3.

Brian was enrolled at GGCC in January of 2016 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. He was enrolled in KG3 after going through some interviews. He is very happy to have been vetted to join GGCC.

He loves the environment as he says he is sure he will no longer be sent home for school levies and now will settle and learn.

He is hopeful and yearns to become a teacher in the future. Brian likes playing football.
