Alex O. 1027

Grade Male: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 10

Alex was born in Gulwe village, Mfangano West location in 2006. He is the last born in a family of six children. Both of his parents were living when he first joined GGCC, but his mother has since passed away. His father, who is the breadwinner, is just a peasant farmer and doesn't make enough to support his large family. His father has a second wife, so he has a total of 12 children. His father lost his hearing with a previous illness.

Alex’s first sibling got married while in grade 7 after getting pregnant. The second and third born are in grades 10 and 12 respectively. Rylene and Sela are learning at Gulwe primary school in grades 8 and 6 respectively.

Alex’s father struggles to make ends meet for his family.  He works on a farm, selling produce in order to feed and educate his family. However, often times its not enough. Alex and his siblings have been sent home from school for unpaid levies and tuition. It would take his father time before he could get the money to pay for his children to return to school. This has really interfered with his children’s academic progress, which has forced them to repeat classes.

While at home, Alex sleeps on a mat and covers himself with a bed sheet. He helps his parents to draw water from the river.

Before joining GGCC, he was learning at Gulwe primary school where he was in grade 3.

Alex was admitted in GGCC in January of 2016 in grade 2 as needy child due to the heavy burden his father has. He is so happy to join GGCC; a school he has wanted for a long time to join. He promises to work hard so as to become a teacher or engineer in future. His father is so grateful to God and to GGCC for considering Alex.

At GGCC, Alex will learn without any interruptions and be able to concentrate on his academic work. He currently is in 3rd grade and placed 22nd out of 41 in his class.

He will also sleep on a bed, covering himself with a blanket and enjoy three meals a day.

His best subject is English. He loves playing soccer.
