Mark K. 1698

Grade Male: 9th - 12th Gr.

School Grade 11

Mark was born in 2005 and comes from Gulwe village of Mfangano Island. He is the second born child in a family of 6 children. His father’s name is Kenneth and his mother’s name is Lencer. Mark currently lives with both of his parents. Mark’s father is the breadwinner of the family. Both parents work their family land to earn and living and provide for their children, however, farming is tough and often doesn’t produce enough to support them fully. The seasonality and unpredictability of the land makes it difficult for Mark’s father to meet all the needs of his children, including paying for all of their school fees. There have been times when they have lacked food, taking only two meals a day and only porridge if it was really bad. Mark’s parents also face health challenges which adds an additional strain on the family with paying for and administering medications in order to keep them healthy enough to work.

Mark’s oldest sibling Beavon Kawala attends Kisumu Polytechnic. The rest of the siblings all attend Gulwe Primary School and they are Ricky Johns (grade 4), Mishael Akoth (grade 2), Renny Rovan (grade PP2) and Samantha Doriet (grade PP1).  Mark was admitted to GGCC in 2022 in grade 9 as a vulnerable child. While at GGCC, Mark will not face the challenges he faced previously. Mark will receive three meals a day and will not fear being sent home from school for lack of payment. He will be able to focus on his academics and work towards his goal of becoming an engineer. Mark has given his life to Christ while at GGCC.  Mark likes reading story books and playing handball.
