Vivian is the only child of her mother. She was born in 2000 in Ugina village, Mfangano South location. Her mother died in 2004 after suffering from malaria. After the death of her mother, Vivian was left under the care of her father who is a peasant farmer. In 2007, Vivian’s father remarried another wife who is now Vivian’s step mother. She has 4 of her own children; Touquine Brenda in grade 2 in Junior Academy, Ruth Akinyi is in KG3 at Ugina primary, Japheth Wankio is in KG3 also learning at Ugina primary, while Esther Adhiambo is not old enough to attend school. 

Vivan's father depends on the farm produce in order to provide for his family. Often times, there is not enough money to pay for both basic needs and food as well as school fees.  Vivan has missed a lot of school for both lack of school fees as well as needing to help her step mother with chores around the home and farm. 

Prior to joining GGCC, Vivian was enrolled at Ugina Primary School where she was in grade 5. Vivian was enrolled in GGCC in January of 2015 after being vetted by the committee. 

Vivan reports that she likes the environment and knows it is a place where she will learn without the interruptions of being sent for lack of payment. She knows she will sleep well on a bed and be able to have three meals daily, which was not always the case at home. She is very hopeful and wants to become a lawyer in the future. Her favorite subjects are social studies and science. She likes playing net ball.

Update, November 2017: Vivian likes being at school because she is able to eat properly, unlike at home.  Also, at home she has to help with many of the chores.  She placed 20th in her class of 50 students. Vivian likes her math and science classes.  She is saved and attends a nondenominational church.  Vivian loves playing netball in her free time.  (Netball is a game played in Africa, similar to basketball but with only one hoop, and the ball is hit in the air instead of being dribbled.)
