School Grade 8

Varon is the oldest in a family of three children. He was born in 2010 in Nyakweri village, Mfangano North location in Mfangano Division. His father and mother died in 2007 and 2014 respectively. Varon and his siblings were left under the care of their grandmother who also cares for other grandchildren.

Varon’s second born sibling, Nereniah Adhiambo, is in a nursery class at Nyakweri primary school, while the last born, Vitron Kigan, is young and has not started school yet.

Varon’s grandmother works odd jobs to support her family, but her income is not enough to put food on the table three times a day for such a large family. Sometimes they take only porridge for lunch. Varon sleeps on a mat under a mosquito net and shares a blanket with his siblings, in an iron roofed house with mud walls. They have been forced to use tinned lamp for lighting when there is no money to buy paraffin.

Varon was formerly learning at Kageno school where he was in grade one. His grandmother has struggled to pay for his school levies and he has been sent home from school for lack of payment. It would take his grandmother some time before she could get the money saved to send him back. He also lacked a proper school uniform.

Varon was admitted to GGCC in January of 2017 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. He is so happy to join GGCC where he will learn freely without interruption, and also get three meals a day. He hopes to bring about change for his family through his education. His best subject is Kiswahili and he would like to become a police officer when he grows up. He likes playing soccer.
