Tonic O. 1648

Grade Male: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 7

Tonic was born in 2010 in Wanyama village on Rusinga Island. He is the youngest of 5 children in his family. Tonic is a total orphan as both of his parents passed away when he was very young. His father passed away from complications of HIV. Later in 2011 his mother passed away from the same disease. His oldest sister, Treezer was married at the time and she and her husband took in Tonic and his two brothers and a sister. After living with his sister for a while, Tonic still a baby, began exhibiting repeated illnesses, which further added to the burden they were facing financially.

Treezer and her husband did the best they could to care for Tonic and his siblings, but they had children of their own to care for and there just never was enough. Treezer’s husband works as a fisherman, but the seasonality and unpredictability of this profession makes it hard to support a large family. Tonic’s basic needs and medical needs were first, so his educational needs fell second. He missed a lot of school when they could not afford to pay for his school fees or materials. Tonic’s second older sibling, Geoffrey, although now married, had to drop out of school in the 5th grade because they just couldn’t afford to send him.

Amos is the 3rd born and he, through the help of other relatives and neighbors was able to make it through high school. The 4th born and next closest to Tonic passed away.  Tonic was learning at Kakiimba Primary School when they could send him before joining GGCC. Tonic was admitted to GGCC in 2022 in grade five as an orphaned and vulnerable child. His sister and her husband are equally very grateful to God and to the administration as this is a big relief for their family. Tonic likes the school environment which is so conducive for learning. At GGCC, he will not miss classes again due to lack of school levies and scholastic materials. He will get all three meals and assistance with monitoring his medication and overall health. This will help Tonic to be able to concentrate on his studies and work towards his dream of becoming a pilot. During his leisure time, he likes playing soccer.
