Both of Pauline's parents died of HIV/AIDS, her father in 2005 and her mother in 2008. Her widowed step-grandmother is the caregiver for Pauline and her younger brother. The grandmother is a peasant farmer and also gets some assistance from her married sons.

During school breaks, Pauline will sleep at her grandmother's house on a mat, using an insecticide-treated mosquito net. At home, she helps with washing her younger brother's clothes and carrying water from the lake.

Pauline likes GGCC better than her previous school because there are chairs for the students, and teaching resources.

Pauline joined GGCC in 2012.
