Melvin is the fourth born child in a family of five children. She was born in 2014 in Gulwe village, Mfangano West location. Both of her parents are alive, although Melvin’s father is sick. Melvin’s parents are peasant farmers, which is very seasonal, and it brings in so little income that this family struggles on a daily basis. In addition to the financial struggles this family faces, both of Melvin’s parents have serious health challenges. The seasonality of their work combined with the health struggles that the parents face causes Melvin and his siblings to struggle. They struggle to have enough food to eat. The struggle with paying for school. Attendance has been sporadic and thus their academic performance has been low.

Melvin’s oldest sibling, Jesse, is learning at Uozi Secondary School in Form 2. The other three siblings, Ibrahim, Jeremy and the youngest, are all learning at Gulwe Primary School in grades 4, 3 and PP1. Melvin was also learning at Gulwe Primary before joining GGCC.

Melvin was admitted to GGCC in January of 2020 in grade 1 as a vulnerable child. Her parents have expressed how grateful they are that their daughter has an opportunity to learn. They are anticipating a better future for their daughter and family. Melvin is also so excited to join GGCC. She loves the school environment and the playground.

At GGCC, she will learn without missing classes due to lack of school levies and other scholastic materials. She will get all the three meals.  She will sleep on a bed and cover herself with a blanket.

Melvin would like to become a teacher when she grows up. During her leisure time, she likes playing hide and seek.  She is in good health.
