Mary Vivian's mother died in 2004; she was not married and the father is unknown. The widowed grandmother, who is Mary Vivian's caregiver, was making her living by hunting birds until she was injured in a fall from a tree. Now she can seldom do any reasonable farm work and is assisted by her two sons who are small scale fishermen with large families of their own.

During school breaks, Mary Vivian will sleep in her grandmother's iron-roofed house, sharing the grandmother's bed and using an insecticide-treated mosquito net. While at home, she helps wiith carrying water from the lake, gathering firewood and washing utensils.

Mary Vivian is thrilled to be at GGCC because she says she is sure of her daily meals.

Mary Vivian joined GGCC in 2012.
