School Grade 7

Hellen Achieng Ojowi is the fourth born in a family of six children. She was born in Nyakwara Village in Kaksingri West location, Suba South Sub County in 2009. Hellen’s father died after a short illness in 2008 just before she was born. Her father’s death left Hellen and her siblings under the care of their mother who was just a house wife.

After the death of Hellen’s father, his extended family took the family’s home and property, rendering Hellen and her family homeless. Her mother would pick up odd jobs like washing clothes for others in order to earn a little bit of money, but this was not enough to support the family. Later the same year, missionaries from the US were able to provide Hellen’s family with shelter. She was able to secure land for the shelter to be built on. Even with a home provided, Hellen’s mother still could not meet the basic needs of such a large family. Unfortunately, this impacted Hellen’s ability to attend school regularly.

Hellen’s oldest sister graduated in 2015 and was able to join a college this year through the help of friends and well-wishers. She has a baby that stays home with one of the siblings. The the second born is in 10th grade at Moi Nyabohanse Girls High School. The third born is in grade six at St Joseph Mikiundu. The fifth born has not joined school yet.

Hellen was admitted to GGCC In January of 2019 in grade 2 as an orphaned and vulnerable child. She along with her mother are so grateful to have been considered for an education at GGCC. She is assured a great education without interruption as well as 3 meals daily.

Hellen is working hard to become a teacher. Her best subjects are English and Kiswahili.
