Don O. 1139

Grade Male: Kindergarten - 8th Gr.

School Grade 6

Don Churchill is the last born in a family of five children. He was born in 2011 in Kaswanga village Mfangano North location in Mfangano Division. Both of his parents are alive, although they have been separated for six years. Don Churchill and his siblings are under the care of the father, who is a small scale fisherman.

Don’s first born sibling, Fina Atieno, dropped out of school, while the other siblings, Laventa Achieng, Melvin Akinyi and Moses Otieno, are learning at Kakrigu primary school in grades 4, 5 and 1 respectively.

Life has not been easy for Don and his siblings. His father, the sole breadwinner, struggles with alcoholism thus affecting his ability to take care of his children. Don’s father was unable to provide Don with the uniform and school supplies he needed while attending Kakrigu Primary school. In addition, Don was sent home for lack of school payment and would be at home a long time before being able to return. His academic progress suffered because of the interruptions. Don also struggles psychologically and exhibits low self-esteem because of his home environment.

While at home, Don and his siblings share a sleeping mat and a bed sheet.

Don was admitted to GGCC in January of 2017 in KG2 as a vulnerable child. He is happy to be at Gethsemane, where he knows he will receive three meals a day and won’t be forced to go home for lack of payment.  He likes the school environment and promises to work hard to bring back hope to his family. He would like to become a teacher when he grows up. He likes playing football at his leisure time.

 Update, November 2017:

Home life is very difficult as Don's father is an alcoholic and the children often go without food.  Don has placed 13th in his class and desires to be a pilot in the future.  He is born again, and attends a catholic church when he is in his village.  In his free time, Don loves to play soccer with his friends.
