School Grade 9

Derrick was born in 2007 in Kiwari village, Mfangano West location on Mfangano Island. He is the first born child in a family of five children. Both of his parents are alive; however, Derrick and his siblings have had a very hard life. Derrick’s father struggles with substance abuse and often becomes abusive towards their mother. When the situation is unbearable for the mother, she leaves the home and returns to her parent’s home, leaving the children behind. Derrick often becomes responsible for taking care of his younger siblings when their mother is gone. And at times they have not attended school but worked the farm in order to ensure they have something to eat. Derrick and his siblings have faced so much so early in life.

Derrick was learning at Rinya Primary School most recently. His performance in school has suffered because of the inconsistency with which he was able to attend school. The same is true for his younger siblings. When they are able to attend school, his younger brother, Bilgate, is in grade 4. The third born, Fred, is in grade 4. The fourth and fifth born are in grades 1 and PP2.

Derrick was admitted to GGCC in March of 2022 in grade 7 as a vulnerable child. He is so happy and grateful to God for this opportunity to learn at GGCC. He will be able to concentrate on his studies and have the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. He wants to make the most of this opportunity. Not only will he focus on his schoolwork, but he will have the opportunity to just be a typical kid. He aspires to be a lawyer. He accepted Christ upon admission to GGCC.

During his leisure time, he likes playing soccer and other athletics. He is in good health.
